چکیده
First and foremost, I wish to express my gratitude to Mr Anssi Klapuri, who was the initiator of this research and provided guidance, advice and support of all kinds for this work. I wish to thank Professor Jaakko Astola for his advice and comments. I am grateful for the staff at the Audio Research Group and Insitute of Signal Processing for providing a stimulating working atmosphere. During the recent years, many persons have become as much friends as colleagues. I want to thank Mr Jari Yli-Hietanen and Professor Pauli Kuosmanen for providing the opportunity to start working at the Audio Research Group even before I had learned the basics of DSP. I wish to thank my parents for understanding the long periods I have been working and not having time to visit them. Finally, I wish to thank Katri for her love and support.

Towards A Sound Recognition System for Traditional Malay Musical Instruments
In recent year, studies on music content analysis especially on musical instrument recognition system are developed extensively. However, almost all the studies are developed based on the Western musical instruments. Meanwhile, study on non-Western musical instrument especially on traditional Malay musical instrument is still lacking. With the enormous amount of instruments data and features sc...
متن کاملThe importance of the non-harmonic residual for automatic musical instrument recognition of pitched instruments
In different papers dealing with automatic musical instrument recognition of pitched instruments, the features used for classification are based solely on the fundamental frequencies and the harmonic series, ignoring the nonharmonic residual. In this paper we explore whether instrument recognition rate of pitched instruments is decreased by removing the non-harmonic information present in the s...
متن کاملQuantifying the Relevance of Locally Extracted Information for Musical Instrument Recognition from Entire Pieces of Music
In this work we study the problem of automatic musical instrument recognition from entire pieces of music. In particular, we present and evaluate 4 different methods to select, from an unknown piece of music, relevant excerpts in terms of instrumentation, on top of which instrument recognition techniques are applied to infer the labels. Since the desired information is assumed to be redundant (...
متن کاملMusical Instrument Recognition in Polyphonic Music
Understanding the timbre and pitch of musical instruments is an important issue for automatic music transcription, music information retrieval and computational auditory scene analysis. In particular, recent worldwide popularization of online music distribution services and portable digital music players makes musical instrument recognition even more important. Musical instruments are one of th...
متن کاملAutomatic Musical Instrument Recognition in Audiovisual Recordings by Combining Image and Audio Classification Strategies
The goal of this work is to incorporate the visual modality into a musical instrument recognition system. For that, we first evaluate state-of-the-art image recognition techniques in the context of music instrument recognition, using a database of about 20000 images and 12 instrument classes. We then reproduce the results of state-of-the-art methods for audio-based musical instrument recognitio...
متن کاملMIRAI: Multi-hierarchical, FS-Tree Based Music Information Retrieval System
With the fast booming of online music repositories, there is a need for content-based automatic indexing which will help users to find their favorite music objects in real time. Recently, numerous successful approaches on musical data feature extraction and selection have been proposed for instrument recognition in monophonic sounds. Unfortunately, none of these methods can be successfully appl...
